We all make choices about our food every day – whether shopping in the supermarket or whilst looking at the menu in a restaurant. Nowadays, we expect all types of fruit and vegetables to be available to us all year round, but this is not how nature intended it! If we eat according to the seasons, we will always have plenty of variety on our plates.

The iPhone application Seasons helps you to select produce which is in season where you are. With Seasons 3.1, the application for iPhone enters its third year, and now includes data for Australia and an improved search of farmers’ markets.

The comprehensive Seasons databank contains 214 entries across the categories of fruit, vegetables, salad leaves, herbs, mushrooms and nuts, and its well-arranged graphical format makes it easy to navigate quickly. Each individual entry includes a photo, details of domestic cultivation and import seasons, and a short text of background information for those who want to learn more.

Do you know if a particular fruit is currently at the peak of its season with farmers around the corner? Or perhaps it is harvest season on the other hemisphere of our planet? Finding out the origin of each product determines whether it has come straight from the farm or the greenhouse, or whether it has already been stored for months and transported to your area. Purchasing by the season helps you support local growers and producers, and provide fresher food for you and your family.

Using Seasons not only enables you to make informed decisions about what produce to purchase, it also raises your environmental awareness by re-establishing the link with nature. You can simply browse through the listings, view by month, or use the integrated search function.

To help you shop for seasonal produce in your local area, Seasons provides a map-based search of farmers’ markets near you. For this, the application uses external data from the Australian Farmers Market Association, Local Food Advisor, the US Department of Agriculture and Qype.

iPhone users can find the application in the category “Lifestyle” or using the search “Seasons”.

When you launch Seasons the first time you get asked for your region setting. If you’re running Seasons on an iPhone you probably make use of the GPS positioning.

However, if you travel somewhere else you might find youself in another state or country. If you ever wondered how to change the region setting after the initial setup there is a simple way. Just open your iPhone’s Settings and scroll down to the Seasons entry. Once you select this (1) you will have the chance to change the region setting (2) again. Apart from the supported regions you can also select the autodetect option which will try to select the correct region using location positioning.

By the way: besides the region you can also select the language you want all entries to be displayed in. This can either be English, German or French.

New release of version 1.3

Whether being at the supermarket or choosing a menu at a restaurant – we have to decide what to eat every single day. Seasons, an application made for the iPhone, makes it now easier for customers across Northern America and Europe to experience produce all at the very peak of freshness just as nature intended.

Seasons for the iPhone and iPod Touch provides all the information you need to make the right decisions when choosing your food. The database of the application contains 170 entries of fruits, vegetables, lettuce, herbs, mushrooms and nuts.

The recent release expands its support for seasonal data from Central Europe, United Kingdom and Ireland to the United States and France. This includes information about local seasons as well as seasonal imports.

The nice user interface gives a weekly overview of produce currently being in season. It also allows to browse the content by month or category as well as searching by name. In addition to a photo of every single entry there is a detailed seasonal chart as well as a brief description text to get some background information.

The application is listed under category Lifestyle at the iTunes App Store

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=300214071&mt=8
